FRIENDS of the Upper East Side Historic Districts, an independent, not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving the architectural legacy, livability, and sense of place of the Upper East Side, seeks entries for our 2015 Annual Awards. Each year, FRIENDS awards outstanding achievement in preservation, architecture, and advocacy on the Upper East Side. Awards will be presented in the spring during our 2015 Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony. The award categories are flexible and can vary each year. Since the proliferation of the automobile, streets have become a space to pass through, rather than places to be in and enjoy. What if having fun on a street was as important as efficiently moving cars, bicycles, and pedestrians through it? The perFORM 2015 Building Design Competition challenges emerging architectural professionals to fuse high performance building with high design. WHAT: This year’s competition calls for architectural students and interns to design a net zero energy, mixed-use, multifamily building in the heart of Portland, Oregon. The High Line didn’t appear out of thin air, but thin air played a role in its development. For decades, the High Line had been seen as an ugly obstacle to neighborhood redevelopment. Comprehensive rezoning of the area and provisions to allow the transfer of development rights turned the structure into an asset.
