  6. After receiving over 350 registrations from 50 different countries at last years inaugural Dencity Competition, Shelter is pleased to invite back architects, planners, students, engineers, designers, thinkers, NGOs and organizations from all over the world to take part in designing for a better city. Rapid world growth and urbanization is not allowing cities to adapt and provide for their inhabitants. Towns are quickly growing into cities, and some of the densest places in the world are comprised of makeshift homes, otherwise referred to as slums. Furthermore, already overcrowded cities have to absorb people leaving their rural hometown in hope of job opportunities. There are currently over 1 billion slum dwellers in the world. This number is expected to reach 2 billion by the year 2030. Now, more than ever, we need to play a central role in the development of substandard neighborhoods. Slums effect much more than just housing; they affect almost all living conditions and communities as a whole. The intent of this competition is twofold: to foster new ideas on how to better handle the growing density of unplanned cities and to spread awareness of this massive problem. Contestants should consider how design can empower communities and allow for a self-sufficient future. There are no restrictions in regards to site, program, or size. Projects can be based on a specific location or a general concept. The object is to limit constraints and give participants the freedom to think in the most creative way possible. Submissions do not need to be created exclusively for this competition, but should not have been submitted elsewhere. Register by: 04-25-2016 / Submit by: 04-25-2016 View the full article

  8. With a population of 3.4 million inhabitants, Berlin is the largest city in Germany and one of the major enclaves of power and culture in Europe. The division of the city during the Cold War doubled the cultural offer. Two theaters, two philharmonic and two stadiums were built generating a great amount of establishments that after the unification enrich the collective culture. Berlin is the cultural capital of the country by excellence. Despite the atrocities it suffered in the past, the city is known for its religious tolerance and multiculturalism. Today the city coexists exemplarily with different religions and cultures from all around the world. Berlin is also home to the alternative youth culture. A great university city where young people from Germany and around the world come to study and socialize. Berlin is a city that has known destruction, division and reconstruction significantly, which transformed it into a laboratory for modern architecture and urbanism. The Berlin Wall divided the city and materialized it in two ways of living. The west side: western, compact and cosmopolitan differentiates from the east side: spacious, simple and Prussian. The multiple events suffered, set the Berlin to be doomed as the “not to be” city. Berlin does not have the museum beauty like other European capitals, but its people and its rich history make it a strong and vibrant city. The constant change is perhaps the only thing that remains stable in the German city. However, Germany today is still reinventing and building new realities. The pulsating city of Berlin offers new possibilities to project a common future. That is why from ARCHmedium we propose the development of new ways of living around this city. The aim is to redefine the collective modes and temporary residences, as well as the pieces that confirm it and how they are grouped. In the alternative district of Kreuzberg, we propose a complex of temporary residences for students, recent graduates, families and travelers. On one hand a university residence with the comforts and services necessary for their operation. Private spaces and collective spaces are combined to generate a social complex. On the other hand, taking advantage of the common services of the residence; the competition also raises a number of rental housing for temporary use as a hostel for young travelers. The bar / restaurant and the hostel will be self- managed by the students of the residence. How would you like to live? Register by: 04-10-2016 / Submit by: 04-24-2016 View the full article

  13. Throughout history, the coast has spawned various architectural types of public infrastructure which enabled and enhanced the coastal experience. The British invention of the marine pier for instance was an architectural innovation that allowed the first coast tourists to walk on water, as it were, only without getting wet or seasick. The seafront promenade in turn was the public place to be for the well-to-do dawdler, but at the same time also an integral part of coastal defence as well as an efficient real-estate instrument along which the first prestigious ‘Grands Hotels’ could be erected. Lastly, the modern installations balnéaires in Ostend, Knokke, and Blankenberge integrated showers, changing rooms, luxury cabins, ticket sales, and steps leading to the beach. This design competition sets out in search of an innovative type of infrastructure and an image quality to enhance the beach experience in the 21st century, outside of the classical tourism season. The design competition specifically looks for a way to enrich the beach experience outside of the summer season. During the fall and winter months, the seafront promenade is quickly lost to the apartment buildings’ shadows. A new walkway on the beach could give residents and visitors the chance to enjoy the Ostend coastline during the fall and winter months. Enjoy the mild winter sun, the salty sea air, the sound of the waves with your family. The design competition aims to develop both a visual language and strategies to allow these restaurant and facility infrastructures to make a contribution to the image quality of the historically renowned Ostend seafront. In addition, this beach walkway could grow into a striking bit of (landscape) architecture, allowing the walkway to develop into a tourist attraction in its own right. 15. The ground plane fundamentally influences a building's orientation and organization. Ground floors, basements, and upper floors are designed in reference to a grade. What if the ground disappeared, leaving buildings suspended in position? Without the connective tissue of streets, yards, and natural landscapes, how does the relationship between buildings change? What types of new infrastructure might be used to reconnect neighborhoods and cities? How do sections of a building reorganize when the primary datum vanishes? What happens when the ground goes missing? Participants should respond to the new condition rather than focus on the event of ground disappearing. Submission Details: Entries may be conceptual, technical, and/or artistic. All graphics and text must be contained within a 4 inch diameter circle with white beyond. A submission is a single 300dpi JPG. Templates are on the website. Send submissions to PINcompetition@gmail.com and include your name, city, state, and country in the e-mail. 16. What does the word ‘basic’ mean? Fundamental, critical, essential, necessary - all these synonyms illustrate the significance of its meaning. Architecturally, we often associate the term with the primitive, the vernacular, even the banal. However, we sometimes forget to take into consideration the relative and temporal nature of the term. What was considered ‘basic’ in the 1900s was a radically different paradigm from what we consider as ‘basic’ today. Wireless technology, cloud storage, cryptocurrencies, smart materials - today, we live in a much more transitory, intangible, and decentralised world. Our vital companions are smart phones. Our essential workplace is not a place but wireless connection. We find ourselves in an era of radical transformation in economic, ecological, political and climatic. This prompts us to rethink the notion of ‘basic’, to update the role and performance of architecture in order to be able to keep up with our new lifestyle. The competition asks you to redefine the word ‘basic’ through an architectural intervention. The choice of program, site, and scale is open. However, they must be clearly defined in each proposal. See more details of requirement, schedule, deliverables, rules and regulations, including awards and judges as link below. Register by: 03-15-2016 / Submit by: 03-15-2016 View the full article
  17. Design Challenge: This design competition is an exploration into the relationship between a physical architectural design, the virtual world, and a tangible site. Investigate the influence of the virtual world blending with physical architecture. A virtual world, built on the framework of the internet, computers, and mobile technology, exchanges information globally. This creates new ways of interacting with the built world. As the virtual and physical worlds become increasingly interconnected, how does this relationship influence physical architecture and its context? As the virtual world continues to grow at an exponential rate, are we entering a virtual epoch? Investigate the phenomenon of a virtual epoch and its relation to physical architecture. Address issues such as, user interaction, building function, digital programmatic uses, construction techniques, socio-economics and environmental contextualism. With inherent challenges in every physical site, explore possible solutions created by the virtual link. How does this process help solve some of the increasingly complex issues in our world today? How are the users and site influenced by the virtual epoch? Register by: 05-31-2016 / Submit by: 06-01-2016 View the full article
